Dr. Tom Morain will present a version of the Dorothy Schwieder Lecture that DMACC has initiated in April to honor Dorothy's Iowa history work. Dr. Morain was asked to present the first Dorothy Schwieder Lecture in 2012. His speech talks about the importance of local history to give meaning to the things around us--places, artifacts, etc. including the environment. The land has a history, too, even back beyond glaciers. Without the knowledge of the "story", we don't appreciate it appropriately.
Dr. Tom Morain was director of history at Living History Farms and administrator of the State Historical Society from 1995-2001. He has authored several books on small town history and Iowa life. A popular public speaker, Morain received the State Historical Society’s Petersen-Harlan Award in 2009, the organization’s highest honor for distinguished service. He currently teaches at Graceland University, serves as Director of Government Relations, and is assisting with the Iowa Civil War Sesquicentennial Commission. In 2002 he received the Distinguished Service Award from Humanities Iowa.
Williamson, who said his career is dedicated not to the process of making public art but to making the process of art public, joined DNR's Project AWARE in 2004 where he found a natural fit as an artist who has long specialized in using recovered objects in his work.
“I’ve been working ahead of the bulldozer for 40 years now,” he said.
Explaining that his art draws upon a hunting and gathering tradition, Williamson's house in rural Ogden is constructed of recycled material. He will be the opening speaker for the 2012 KIB Annual Conference. His sculpture, Drop In, (shown here) created in 2005 will also be on display during the conference.
