Outdoor enthusiasts (from fishing to boating and camping to snowmobiling) are in close association with the out-of-doors and the natural resources of Iowa.  They should be the first to make sure that those resources are treated with respect and pride.  Our program's slogan, "Take A Stand For Your Land," reflects a personal commitment to care and stewardship of our land and its resources.  We can enhance the quality of our countryside, increase pride and respect and greatly enhance our "quality of life" through a commitment to preventing littering and cleaning up our landscape.

The outdoor enthusiast can become involved in this effort many different ways:

  • Bringing back your own waste and debris from your outings.
  • Picking up litter and material that you see during your outdoor experience.
  • Adopting a roadway, park, river or other natural area.
  • Reporting illegal dumping and dump sites.
  • Reporting travel littering (1-888-NOLITTR).
  • Cleaning up areas before any outdoor competition or event.
  • Picking up floating or shoreline items when boating.
  • Reducing your consumption of materials.
  • Reusing items - salvaging items that can be reused, and in particular, reusing the mesh litter bags.
  • Recycling items - don't simply throw them into a trash receptacle.
  • Keeping cigarette butts out of the landscape.
  • Making sure that all of those using the out-of-doors use the litter bags and kits that this program provides.
  • Disposing of the material that you have collected in an appropriate manner.

The mesh litter bags are reusable and made of a recycled plastic fabric.  If you are interested in distributing these bags, please contact the Iowa DNR or Gerry Schnepf of KIB at 515-323-6507 or gschnepf@keepiowabeautiful.com.

Illegal dumping, the improper disposal of waste materials along roadsides and in ditches, costs Iowa taxpayers millions of dollars each year. Time and money spent by road crews and volunteers for cleanup and law enforcement agencies to investigate could be used for other community needs, such as beautification efforts, hiring another police officer, purchasing a new fire truck or completing a library expansion. Illegal dumping cleanup costs are a waste of tax dollars that could be put to better use in your community.

In addition to the taxpayer burden, illegal dumping poses environmental and health risks, safety problems and negatively impacts economic development. Above all, it is a crime.
