Due to the high percentage of older housing across the state, the incidence of lead poisoning in Iowa is at least 3-4 times the national average. Childhood lead poisoning can cause developmental delays, behavior problems, and problems in school.

If your project involves buildings or residences built before 1960, it is likely that they contain lead-based paint. Disturbing lead-based paint can create health hazards for unprotected workers and residents, especially children. You should take precautions to protect yourself, workers, and any residents. Laying down plastic, wet scraping and wearing protective equipment can minimize exposure to lead dust.

Iowa law requires that any contractor or landlord working on a residential property built prior to 1978 notify residents that remodeling, renovation or repainting may disturb lead-based paint.

The Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program can work with organizations in your community to prevent exposures to workers and children. Please call us at 800.972.2026 or 515.242.5902 to set up a presentation or to receive more information.
