Clean and Green Second Grade Program Guide

Keep Iowa Beautiful presents Clean and Green to meld service learning, place-based, environmental and character education. Since each lesson is designed to teach an essential concept of the Common Core Standards, this program has the potential to become an integral part of your curriculum. Clean and Green sends teachers and kids out to the playground and community to find ways to make those places better while they learn Mathematics, Life Science, Social Studies, Literacy and 21st Century Skills.
With help from the Waste Commission of Scott County, Character Counts! in Iowa, Davenport public and parochial schools, and Wells Fargo, Keep Iowa Beautiful has developed 20 activities based on the Iowa Core and the Four Keys of Character Education, which are developing a safe, challenging community, self study, other study and opportunities for public performances–-to assure that teachers have the most current research and best practices available for their students. You can see the matrix for all three grade levels here.
The guide is flexible; it has engaging activities for the classroom, afterschool and summer programs. Each activity can stand on its own, but will be more powerful as a comprehensive unit. During 2010-2011, the pilot year, please provide feedback to Martha McCormick.
